Leguán madagaskarský je obyvatelem suchých lesů, ale nachází se i na skalách a na zemi. Vyskytuje se hlavně na západě a severozápadě Madagaskaru, ve středu ostrova až po hranici východního deštného lesa. Na jihu zasahuje až k městu Morondava. Jedná se o robustní silné ještěry, kteří dorůstají skoro 40 cm.
K chovu doporučujeme větší terárium minimálně 100cm dlouhé, šířka postačuje 50 cm a na výšku může být terárium vyšší, například 80-100 cm. Jsou to poměrně rychle se pohybující ještěři, kteří potřebují větší prostor pro svůj pohyb. Jako substrát v teráriu je vhodné použít písek nebo směs písku a rašeliny. Pokud v teráriu vytvoříme na zadní stěně pevné pozadí (korková deska, přírodní korek, umělá skála), tak jej leguáni budou s oblibou využívat k pohybu. Ve výbavě terária by neměly chybět silnější větve a miska na vodu. Rostliny do terária nemá smysl dávat, protože je leguáni zpravidla svým pohybem zničí.

Teplotu v teráriu udržujeme na hodnotách 25-30 °C s možností lokálního ohřevu až na 35-40 °C. Tyto teploty udržujeme hlavně v období od března do listopadu. V tomto období terárium i mírně rosíme. Pro úspěšné rozmnožení je nutné vytvořit období klidu od prosince do února, kdy teplota může klesnout na pokojovou teplotu 18-24 °C a omezíme i rosení terária.

Hlavní složku potravy tvoří hmyz - velcí cvrčci, sarančata, švábi a v menší míře larvy potemníků Zoopobas a holata jako doplněk. Potravu můžeme doplnit i ovocem a zeleným krmením, které leguáni přijímaji jen ve velice omezené míře. Důležitý je doplněk vitamínů a minerálních látek, které přidáváme pomocí běžných doplňků (sera reptimineral, tetra reptisol, Nutrimix Rep a další). Pro lepší využívaní vitamínu D je vhodné terárium doplnit zdrojem UVB záření v podobě kompaktní UVB zářivky nebo klasickou UVB zářivkou.
